However, professional services firms face an AI governance paradox. Their people are sophisticated, tech-savvy, and under intense time pressure — exactly the profile most likely to adopt AI tools independently. Consultants, auditors, and advisors routinely work with the most sensitive data their clients possess: financial records, strategic plans, M&A targets, tax positions, regulatory exposures, and internal investigations. When a consultant pastes a client's strategic plan into ChatGPT to help draft a recommendation, or an auditor feeds client financial data into an AI analytics tool, the confidentiality breach is immediate and potentially devastating to both the client relationship and the firm's reputation.
