What is Data Loss Prevention (DLP)?

Security technology and processes that detect and prevent the unauthorized transfer of sensitive data, including through AI tools and services.

Data Loss Prevention (DLP) for AI is a set of technologies and policies designed to prevent sensitive organizational data from being exposed through interactions with artificial intelligence tools. Traditional DLP solutions focus on email, file transfers, and network endpoints, but AI-specific DLP addresses the unique challenge of data entered into AI prompts, uploaded to AI services, or processed by AI APIs.

AI DLP operates through several mechanisms: content inspection that analyzes text being submitted to AI tools for patterns matching PII, financial data, or intellectual property; context-aware blocking that prevents certain data types from being sent to unapproved AI services; inline proxy monitoring that intercepts AI API calls at the network level; and browser extension controls that monitor AI tool interactions in real time.

Key categories of sensitive data that AI DLP must protect include personally identifiable information (PII) such as names, emails, and national ID numbers; financial data including account numbers, transaction records, and forecasts; health information governed by HIPAA; source code and technical documentation; legal documents and communications; and strategic business information.

According to IBM's 2024 Cost of a Data Breach Report, the average cost of a data breach involving AI systems is $4.88 million. Organizations without AI DLP controls are significantly more exposed as employees increasingly use AI tools for sensitive work tasks. A 2024 study found that 1 in 3 employees had inadvertently shared confidential company information with external AI tools.

Effective AI DLP implementation requires integration with the AI tools employees actually use (including ChatGPT, Copilot, Claude, and Gemini), real-time enforcement rather than post-hoc analysis, employee-friendly controls that educate rather than just block, and executive dashboards showing AI data risk posture across the organization.
